In January 2023, the Central Bank of Brazil reported a data leak involving over 53,000 Pix keys, affecting customers of various financial institutions. According to the Central Bank, the leaked information included data such as names, CPF (Brazilian social security numbers), the institution linked to the transfer key, and other registration details. However, the Central Bank emphasized that sensitive data, such as passwords, transaction history, and bank balances, were not compromised.

The breach was detected on a specific platform used by financial institutions to register and consult Pix keys. According to the Central Bank, the incident did not compromise the integrity of the Pix instant payment system itself, which remains secure and fully operational. Nevertheless, the bank acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and stated that it is investigating the incident in collaboration with the institutions involved to ensure the issue is resolved and to prevent future breaches.

Affected users were notified directly by their financial institutions, and the Central Bank advised customers to stay alert for any suspicious communication or unusual activity related to their accounts. Although the leaked data does not include complete financial information, the Central Bank stressed the importance of maintaining digital security and being extra vigilant against potential fraud attempts, such as phishing scams, that could exploit this information in future, unrelated fraud attempts
